Cake, Congrats, Graduation

Stack of Books – PhD in Lit – Graduation Cake – Salinas, CA

phd-of-literature-graduation-cake

Patty contacted me about making something special for her husband, who was graduating with his PhD in Literature from the University of California- Santa Cruz.  She knew that she wanted a banana slug (the UCSC mascot) with a grad cap, and liked the idea of a stack of books.  When I asked her what else he liked to try to make it as personal towards him as possible, she said that he liked wine and that they travel around every weekend for their daughters softball games so they don’t really have time for much else!  :)

Everything on is Literature based on the cake.  For the base, I copied out from pages of the Great Gatsby, a literary classic.  The bottom book has the beginning title of Dr. Leal’s dissertation, (I couldn’t fit the whole thing :) ), and I found a book about Softball that I felt was appropriate since they support their daughter.  The banana slug is reading Sideways (which was made into a movie) about traveling thru California wine country.

Congratulations Dr. Leal!

Cake:  Bottom Book- Marble, Top Book- Red Velvet

Icing:  Strawberry Buttercream and Cream Cheese Icing

Covering:  Fondant with fondant and gumpaste embellishments and edible gold luster dust

2010 Palma High School Graduation – Topsy Turvy Cake

palma-high-josh-grad-cake-2010

Norma wanted a special cake for the graduation party they were having for her son.  I love it when I talk to mom’s and you can tell how much love and pride they have in their children because it just oozes out of them.  I could just tell how much Josh meant to Norma and how special she wanted this to be for him.

I am IN LOVE with how this cake turned out.

I love the topsy turvy whimsical-ness of it.

I love the bright colors.

I love the wording.

I love the personalized details.

It was such a fun cake to make.  I feel like I get to know the person it’s for on a more personal level when the cake includes personalized items.

And I really like it.

It’s a really neat feeling to know that when Josh saw his cake, he was going to have a connection and memory to every single item.  It’s as if you’re getting close to someone you’ve never met thru your artistry and it makes me want to make it that much more spectacular.

Congratulations Josh!

Cake:  Strawberry, Chocolate, Red Velvet

Icing:  Strawberry buttercream, peanut-butter fudge buttercream, cream cheese

Covering:  Fondant with fondant embellishments and gumpaste personalizations

Pharmacy School Graduation Cupcakes

Dr. Travis Rose.

That is now Amy’s husbands official title.

He graduated from Pharmacy school this past weekend and in order to celebrate the occassion, they were throwing a brunch and no brunch is complete without cupcakes for dessert!  Amy and I threw a few ideas around and decided on making a grad cap, diploma, pills and RX pad for the cupcake toppers.  She was so great to work with and it was fun to see the table come together!

Congratulations to you both!!!  If I ever need pills…..LOL.  I kid, I kid.

Cupcakes:  Chocolate and Strawberry

Icing:  Standard Buttercream

Toppers:  Diploma and grad cap- paper; pills – fondant with the words impressed; RX pad- fondant with edible ink prescription

There are also cookie bags for the kiddos- I did them in a surf/beach theme.  They are M&M/chocolate chip cookies with a surfboard nametag.
